Nigeria recorded a win over Liberia in their 2022 World Cup Qualifying match, thanks to Kelechi Iheanacho’s first-half brace which handed the Super Eagles a comfortable 2-0 victory.

The match took place at Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos State, on Friday.

The home team, Nigeria, who started the game brightly went ahead in the 24th minute with Iheanacho’s conversion of midfielder, Alex Iwobi’s clever pass from the right flank.

The Eagles continued to mount pressure on their opponent in the quest for their second goal.

Close to the halftime, the Liberians failed to stop the threat again as Iwobi flicks a header to Iheanacho, who showed great legwork to slot the ball past the Liberian goalie.

Recall the Super Eagles have only missed one World Cup competition – Germany 2006 – since their debut at the 1944 World Cup in the United States, where they ended as runner-up.

Meanwhile, for the 2022 World Cup, Nigeria is in Group C against Liberia, Cape Verde, and the Central African Republic.

However, today’s match against the Lone Stars marks the 15th time both sides are meeting. Their last meeting ended up in a 6-1 victory for the Eagles during the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in Calabar.
