The Federal Government has pledged to recover millions of naira wrongly paid to 588 medical doctors.

Minister of labour, Chris Ngige, made this known while speaking with journalists in Abuja on Sunday.

Ngige said the affected doctors benefitted wrongly from the Medical Residency Training Fund, which was meant for a particular category of doctors.

The minister said the names of the 588 doctors were discovered after a scrutiny of the 8,000 names submitted by Chief Medical Directors of federal institutions.

He noted that approximately 2,000 names should have been omitted as they don’t have Postgraduate Reference Numbers of National Postgraduate Medical College and (or) that of the West African Postgraduate Medical College.

The minister, however, disclosed that a substantial amount of the money had been returned by some of the health personnel.

Ngige said the result of the first round of scrutinization will be compared to the lists the Post-Graduate Medical College and the Chief Medical Directors presented.

He assured that immediately the genuinity of names submitted are verified, the Accountant-General will pay the beneficiaries, adding that the verification is done to avoid the events of 2020.
