The Federal Government has postponed the 2023 population and housing census from March 29 to May 2023.

This was disclosed by the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, on Wednesday, after a Federal Executive Council meeting presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja.

Mohammed revealed that the National Population Commission (NPC) had presented a memo in request for some software to allow them to conduct the census in May as the census could not be held on March 29 due to the governorship election.

“There was a memo presented by the National Population Commission, seeking for some software to allow them conduct the census in May this year. I believe because of the rescheduling of the elections, they cannot commence the census as scheduled.

“They sought Council’s approval for a contract to procure software for the census at the sum of N2.8 billion,” he said.

Blackbox Nigeria had earlier reported that the NPC is considering the postponement of the population census that was initially stipulated to hold on March 29 due to the change in the date of the gubernatorial elections from March 11 to March 18, 2023.
