FG Distance Self From Supposed Monitoring Of Citizens’ Calls And Social Media Posts

The Federal Government on Monday has debunked a report making rounds in the media that the Ministry of Interior is currently recording phone calls and saving posts of its citizens as an act of monitoring.

This disclaimer was made known in a communique signed by Segun Adeyemi, a Special Assistant to Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed.

He noted that no regulation either old or new is recording and monitoring the citizens.

He described the development as disinformation which have been selling well in the social media sphere recently.

He also called the attention of the general public to the intention of those behind the report as those who want to imply that the current regime is working to stifle freedom of speech enjoyed by all.

”There is no regulation, old or new, from the Ministry of Interior or any Federal Government agency requiring the recording of all calls or the monitoring of Social Media platforms like WhatsApp, Twitter or Facebook.

“We are therefore using this medium to inform all Nigerians that what is being circulated in this regard is totally false and should be disregarded.

”We thank all Nigerians who have reached out to us in an effort to confirm the authenticity or otherwise of this information, which is now being widely circulated on the Social Media. This is the best way to ensure that the purveyors of false news do not dominate our media
space,” he said.
