The Federal Government has ordered increased security measures at Nigeria’s borders in anticipation of the planned #EndBadGovernance protest, scheduled to begin on August 1, 2024.

The protest, aimed at addressing economic hardship, has raised concerns among security agencies.

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has directed its officers to be vigilant and prevent foreign elements from entering the country with sinister motives. The Comptroller General of Immigration, KN Nandap, emphasized the need for professionalism and patriotism in discharging duties.

“The Comptroller General of Immigration Service, KN Nandap, has directed Zonal Heads, State Command Comptrollers and Divisional Immigration Officers (DIOS) of the Service across the country to be extra vigilant and step up surveillance in view of the planned nationwide protest by some groups,” said KT Udo, spokesman of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS).

This move comes as other security agencies, including the Department of State Services (DSS) and the police, have also raised concerns about potential hijacking of the protest by criminal elements and foreign mercenaries. The DSS claims to have identified sponsors of the protest, while the police have requested organizers to submit details before the protest.

In the Federal Capital Territory, over 4,200 police personnel have been deployed to maintain security. The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has also warned of potential mischief makers seeking to hijack the protest.

In response, President Tinubu and state governors have been engaging with stakeholders, urging dialogue and requesting more time to address the country’s challenges. The government’s efforts aim to prevent violence and maintain stability during the planned protest.
