The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC has recovered a sum of $13,204 among other properties from a man, Nwachi Kingsley, who allegedly defrauded an American, Nicole Sayers, of $370,000 in a ‘fake marriage’.
This was gathered on Thursday, in a post by the EFCC on its X handle.
According to the post, Nwachi was earlier arrested on Wednesday, February 15, 2023, in Abuja for allegedly marrying Sayers falsely.
In the marriage, the defendant was said to have defrauded her of $370,000.
However, on Tuesday, the EFCC told the High Court, in Maitama, Abuja, that it has recovered the sum of $13,204.00, alongside a plot of land in Port Harcourt, Rivers state, a Lexus Ex 350 and Toyota Venza cars.
Also, gathering evidence against the defendant, “various fraudulent profiles in Linkedin which he admitted to creating,” were discovered.
In the same vein, a fraudulent contract award letter, purportedly given by the Federal government, printed from his phone, was discovered.
The commission also said that the defendant’s lawyer responded with a letter for a plea bargain, after evidence , including certificate of identification, a notice of nominal complaint with copies of intent to award the contract and an iPhone 11Pro Max were tendered against his client.
After listening to the parties, the court, under the aegis of Justice U.P Kekemeke, adjourned the matter till April 30, 2024, for continuation of trial.
