The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has shutdown a KFC outlet at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos, effective March 28, 2024 over alleged discriminatory treatment of former ogun governor’s son, Debola Daniel.
This was in response to a report on social media by a Passenger with Reduced Mobility (PRM), Debola Daniel, alleging discriminatory treatment experienced at the airport, an offence contrary to the provision of section 55 of General Provisions on Discrimination.
Earlier on Wednesday, Debola Daniel, a son of former Ogun State governor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, had taken to his social media page to lament his maltreatment by the fast-food outlet at MMIA, detailing his humiliating experience and emphasising the broader implications of such discriminatory practices.
Debola said he was denied entry into the KFC outlet alongside four companions which include his wife due to his use of a wheelchair.
Reacting to the allegation, a press release dated 28th March signed by Mrs Obiageli Orah shows that the Managing Director/Chief Executive of FAAN, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, promptly initiated an investigation upon learning of the allegations comprising Mrs. Obiageli Orah, the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Mr. Sunday Ayodele, the Regional Manager South West, Mrs. Ijeoma Nwosu-Igbo, the Acting General Manager of Public Affairs, and Mr. Kerri, the International Terminal Manager, deployed to assess the situation.
However, based on the findings of the investigative team, FAAN has taken the decision to shut down the KFC facility at MMIA, where the incident reportedly occurred.
In addition to the closure, FAAN has instructed the management of KFC to issue an unreserved written apology to the affected PRM and to prominently display a policy statement of non-discrimination at the entrance of their facility before resuming operations.
