Embattled Oyo deputy governor finally impeached

The Oyo State House of Assembly has impeached the embattled deputy governor, Rauf Olaniyan.

Members of the Assembly removed Olaniyan during its plenary on Monday.

The impeachment followed the adoption of the report of the seven-man panel constituted by the Chief Judge to investigate allegations of gross misconduct against the deputy governor.

The report, which was read by the Majority Leader of the Assembly, Sanjo Adedoyin, said the deputy governor was found culpable of all the allegations levelled against him.

The Assembly then approved Olaniyan’s removal from office leaning on Section 188(9) of the 1999 constitution (as amended).

It would be recalled that Olaniyan was said to have fallen out relationship with his principal, Governor Seyi Makinde since they assumed office in 2019.

The reported cold war also manifested when Makinde announced the Chairman of Oyo State Housing Corporation, Bayo Lawal, as his running mate for the 2023 election in the state.

Weeks later, the embattled deputy governor announced his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
