President Bola Tinubu has appointed a former Vice Chancellor of the Lagos State University, Professor John Oladapo Obafunwa as the new Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR).
The presidency confirmed Obafunwa’s appointment in a statement on Monday.
The renowned forensic pathologist is expected to resume office on on July 24, 2024, succeeding Professor Babatunde Salako, whose tenure expires on July 23, 2024.
Obafunwa’s tenure as LASU VC was mired in controversy and marked by widespread discontent among staff and students, who accused him of administrative malpractice and unresponsiveness. Issues such as delayed issuance of certificates to graduates and unpaid salaries for lecturers became emblematic of his leadership challenges.
His tenure culminated in protests and calls for his removal, with unions ultimately demanding his ouster even before his term officially ended.
Despite these controversies, Obafunwa’s professional credentials in forensics and pathology are widely acknowledged. He previously served as the Provost of the Lagos State University College of Medicine and has been instrumental in advancing forensic pathology in Nigeria.
President Tinubu expressed confidence in Obafunwa’s ability to leverage his extensive experience and academic qualifications to enhance the NIMR’s research capabilities and its impact on public health in Nigeria.
