A tragic accident claimed the lives of eight people, including students, in Mpape, a suburb of Abuja, on Thursday afternoon.
A truck carrying sharp sand lost control and crashed into several vehicles and tricycles along the road to Mpape junction.
According to an eyewitness, Mustapha Aminu, the truck’s brake failed and one of its tires burst, making it impossible for the driver to stop.
The truck smashed into more than seven tricycles and some cars, killing at least eight people on the spot. Aminu said the driver escaped from the scene with the help of a motorcycle rider.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed the incident and said that five bodies and 10 injured persons were recovered by their rescue team.
The FRSC also said that 13 vehicles, including the truck and a motorcycle, were involved in the accident.
