As the 20th edition of the National Sports Festival drags near, Team Lagos appears to be leaving no stone unturned to come out tops. This year’s edition is coming up in Benin, Edo state.

For the last few days, Team Lagos have been camping at the Agbowa Relief Centre, along the Ikorodu-Epe axis of the state to the excitement of the athletes and officials alike. With a focus on facilities in Ikorodu, the team has been holding their trainings at the Lagos State Polytechnic, Ikorodu. Some other sports especially football have also been training at the Strong Tower grounds in Ota-Ona, Ikorodu.
With Lagos having a principle of using home grown talents, the team has over the last few days gone through a rigorous process of training after an initial trial session, which saw the best chosen to represent the state in the various sports.
Lagos is competing in 40 sports (8 teams sports and 32 individual sports) and the team currently consists of 680 athletes all of whom will be accompanied by official and administrators.
The closed camp will be on for 13 days before the team departs for Benin where the camp opens on March 20.

In the same vein, athletes have expressed their excitement over their optimism of winning medals while disclosing that the vibe in camp has been really positive.

The athletes whom our correspondent chatted with revealed that they are not just physically ready but also highly spirited to represent Lagos at the National Sports Festival and bring home medals.

Aminat Idris who won Gold at #Eko2012 and two silver medals at #Abuja2018 vowed to improve on her previous performances by winning about four Gold medals. She further expressed her optimism that Lagos will come out tops at the Festival.

Osibote Omotayo who plays Scrabble also reiterated what Idris said while expressing satisfaction with with mood of the camp.

“We are absolutely ready for the festival. All the athletes are in high spirit and the vibe in camp has been very positive,” Osibote said.

Another athlete, a Taekwondoist named Odubote Rasheed also disclosed that the preparation was top notch while also commending the management of the Lagos State Sports Commission and the state governor.
