Edo Lawmakers Impeach Speaker, Suspend Him For 3 Months As New Replacement Is Announced

 

Hon Justin Okonoboh, the Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly has been unseated after fellow lawmakers passed a vote of no confidence.

Reports gathered that the impeachment notice which was signed by 16 out of the 24 lawmakers was read at the plenary session on Monday, August 14th.

Hon Kabiru Adjoto has since been elected as the new Speaker. He is now the Fourth Speaker of the current State Assembly since inauguration in 2015. Hon Roland Asoro was also elected as the new Majority Leader.

It will be recalled that Hon Victor Edoro replaced Hon Elizabeth Ativie after she was impeached. He was later impeached for misconduct in May, 2016.

The former Speaker, Hon Okonoboh, Ativie and former Majority Leader, Foly Ogedengbe were all suspended for three months by the new leadership of the House and a 3-man Committee was set up to probe the impeached Speaker’s tenure.
