Ebonyi Mourns As Gunmen Murder School Principal

The people of Ebonyi State are in shock and grief as they mourn the death of a school principal and his teacher who were killed by gunmen suspected to be cultists.

The deceased, Simon Ominyi and Moses Nwibo, were the principal and a teacher of Nkaleke Echara Community Secondary School, Ojiegbe respectively.

 

They were attacked and shot dead by their assailants on 13 October in the school premises. The killers also made away with their motorcycle

The incident is one of the several cases of cult violence that have rocked Abakaliki, the state capital, in recent times.

The Ebonyi State Government has condemned the heinous murder as “condemnable” and vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice.

The Commissioner for Education, Paul Nwobashi, who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday, said that Governor Francis Nwifuru had contacted the security agencies, especially the police, to investigate the matter and arrest the culprits.

He said that some persons were already being questioned in connection with the crime.

He also assured the teachers in the state that the government was working to improve security in schools and urged them to be vigilant and report any suspicious activities.

He described the slain principal and teacher as “dedicated and hardworking” and said that the state government was not happy about their loss.

“We still mourn them to date. It is too bad,” he said.
