Peter Obi, a former Anambra State governor and presidential aspirant under Labour Party, has warned his supporters against insulting or abusing other aspirants in the race for the nation’s top job in the 2023 elections.
Obi, who recently dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), made this known in a statement on his verified Twitter page on Sunday.
The 60-year-old politician noted that though he appreciate the support of well-meaning Nigerians, they must conduct themselves with civility and avoid personal attacks on other aspirants and candidates.
“It has been brought to my attention, and I have also observed that some of my numerous supporters are making personal attacks on other aspirants/candidates,” he said.
“Whilst thanking you for your support, which I sincerely value and appreciate, I humbly appeal that we all imbibe the spirit of sportsmanship and avoid name-calling or personal attacks on other aspirants and candidates.
“The common goal is to make Nigeria better. Elections are a democratic contest and need not be adversarial.”

The former governor, until recently, was a presidential aspirant under the PDP. He, however, resigned from the opposition party days to its presidential primaries, citing “issues that are at variance with my persona and principles”. He has since joined the Labour Party where he hopes to pursue his bid to lead Nigeria.
