Dembele signs new contract amid uncertainty over Barcelona future

Ousmane Dembele has signed a new two-year contract with Barcelona, bringing an end to speculations about his future at the club.

The new deal will see the French winger stay at the Nou Camp until June 30, 2024, the Catalan club confirmed on Thursday.

It is understood that the 25-year-old has bizarrely agreed to a huge pay cut to remain with the Blaugrana, as the new terms he signed will see his salary reduced by an initial 40% amid Barcelona’s challenging financial situation, although he agreed in the belief that he will receive a new and improved offer in a years’ time.

The Frenchman had been linked to a move to Premier League side Chelsea and Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain, following the expiration of his original deal with Barcelona at the end of June and he was technically a free agent.

After initially refusing to refusing to put pen to paper, the winger will now remain at the LaLiga giants for another two years.

As expected, manager Xavi Hernandez is believed to have played a key role in convincing Dembele to accept the club’s contract proposal.

Dembele originally joined Barcelona in a blockbuster transfer from Borussia Dortmund back in 2017.

The French winger made 150 appearances for the club, despite suffering numerous injuries during his five-year spell at the Nou Camp.
