Cutting cost: Nigeria to merge EFCC, ICPC

Nigeria will merge its two key anti-graft agencies, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) as part of the implementation of the Stephen Orosanye report.
The decision to merge the EFCC and ICPC was one of the reforms marked in the merger part in the Orosanye report whose implementation was approved by President Bola Tinubu on Monday.
The EFCC, established in 2003, and the ICPC, established in 2000, have both been instrumental in the government’s anti-corruption efforts, with overlapping mandates in investigating and prosecuting corrupt practices.
The implementation of the Orosanye report has long been awaited, with calls for a reduction in the cost of governance.
The merger of the EFCC and ICPC is expected to lead to synergies in anti-corruption efforts and improve coordination in the fight against financial crimes.
