The Nigerian Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) will be converted into a full-fledged agency under the ministry of foreign affairs, as part of the implementation of the Stephen Orosanye report.

The decision to convert NIDCOM into an agency was one of the reforms listed in the Orosanye report whose implementation was approved by President Bola Tinubu on Monday.

NIDCOM, currently headed by former federal lawmaker Abike Dabiri-Erewa, was established in 2017 with the primary objective of coordinating and harnessing the potential of Nigerians in the diaspora for national development.

Dabiri-Erewa, who has been at the helm of NIDCOM since its establishment, will now report directly to the Foreign Affairs ministry.

Meanwhile, the implementation of the Orosanye report has been a subject of debate and anticipation within government circles for several years since the formation of the committee during the Goodluck Jonathan administration. The report, compiled by a presidential committee led by Stephen Oronsaye in 2012, recommended the merger and scrapping of numerous government agencies to reduce redundancy and streamline operations.
