COVID-19: UNILAG shuts hostels, students to receive lectures virtually

The Senate of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) has mandated all students to vacate the halls of residence latest by 12pm on Thursday, July 15, 2021.

Lectures for the rest of the semester will now be delivered virtually with effect from 26th July 2021.

This decision was reached during an emergency meeting of the University Senate, following the surge in the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the emerging third wave of the pandemic among students of the institution.

According to a statement by the Dean of Students Affairs (DSA), it was necessary to check the spread of COVID-19 on campus.

“No access will be granted to any student after 12.00 noon on 15 July. The hostels will be locked indefinitely therefore students are advised to move all their personal effects at once,” the DSA said.

Reports indicate that two students have been confirmed positive to the disease and that the school had stepped up the enforcement of its COVID-19 protocols.

A COVID-19 pandemic update issued by the university also confirmed that the medical centre had recorded an increase in the number of patients with COVID-19 symptoms.
