The much-anticipated 5-A-Side Chairman’s Cup tournament in Ijede Local Council Development Area began in grand style on Monday, December 2, 2024, at the Anwarul-Islam Primary School, Ijede. The event was officially launched by the Executive Chairman of Ijede LCDA, Hon. Motunrayo Gbadebo-Alogba, who performed the ceremonial kick-off to signify the start of the competition.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Hon. Gbadebo-Alogba highlighted her administration’s commitment to empowering youths through sports and other developmental programs. She stated that the competition aims to unearth young football talents, foster teamwork, and promote unity among participants. “This tournament is not just about football; it’s about building bonds, nurturing dreams, and promoting healthy competition,” she said.
The opening day attracted an impressive turnout of spectators, who filled the venue with excitement and cheers for their favorite teams. The first match of the tournament saw Ahmadiyya FC and CMS All-Star FC lock horns in an intense contest that ended in a 1-1 draw.
The Chairman’s Cup is expected to run over several weeks, featuring matches between local teams as they compete for the coveted trophy. The tournament has been praised for its role in fostering sportsmanship and camaraderie within the Ijede community.
