California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed a contentious bill into law, prohibiting schools from informing parents about changes to a student’s gender identity.
The move has drawn fierce criticism from Elon Musk, who has announced plans to relocate the headquarters of SpaceX and X (formerly Twitter) from California to Texas in response.
Musk, a vocal opponent of the bill, took to social media to express his disapproval, stating that the law “attacks both families and companies.”
“This is the final straw. Because of this law and the many others that preceded it, attacking both families and companies, SpaceX will now move its HQ from Hawthorne, California, to Starbase, Texas”, Musk writes.
He had previously warned Newsom that such legislation would drive families and businesses out of California.
“I did make it clear to Governor Newsom about a year ago that laws of this nature would force families and companies to leave California to protect their children,”
The new law reverses decisions made by conservative school districts that required teachers to notify parents of changes to a student’s name, pronouns, or participation in programs that don’t align with their official gender.
Newsom has been a vocal advocate for LGBTQ rights and has clashed with conservatives over gender issues in state schools.
