President Buhari Honours MKO Abiola With GCFR Award, Makes June 12 New Democracy Day
After due consultations, President Muhammadu Buhari said he has decided to make June 12, Nigeria’s new democracy day.
In a statement obtained by BlackBox Nigeria, Buhari said he is delighted to announce that the Federal Government will henceforth celebrate June 12 will as Democracy Day.
He also said a posthumously highest Honour in the land, GCFR, will be awarded to the late Chief MKO Abiola, the presumed winner of the cancelled June 12, 1993 elections.
“Dear Nigerians, I am delighted to announce that, after due consultations, the Federal Government has decided that henceforth, June 12 will be celebrated as Democracy Day.
We have also decided to award posthumously the highest Honour in the land, GCFR, to the late Chief MKO Abiola, the presumed winner of the cancelled June 12, 1993 elections.”
It will be recalled that Chief MKO Abiola died in custody after he was imprisoned by the military Junta of late Sani Abacha.
