A Correctional Service officer was killed on Wednesday night when gunmen attacked the Afokang Correctional Facility in Calabar, Cross River State.
The spokesman for the State Command of the Correctional Service, Affanga Etim, confirmed the incident to reporters on Thursday.
Etim said that the security team at the facility exchanged fire with the attackers, who did not manage to get close to the main building.
He also said that no inmate escaped or was killed during the attack.
He added that more armed personnel have been deployed to the facility and everything is under control.
The attack also injured a mother and her six-years-old daughter who were hit by stray bullets.
The State Comptroller of the Correctional Service is currently holding a meeting with his management team to address the situation.
