Bonucci to retire next football season

Italy captain Leonardo Bonucci, 36, has announced his retirement from football at the end of the upcoming season.

The defender, currently contracted with Juventus, expressed his decision on Juventus’ YouTube channel, declaring it as the end of an era in Italian-style defense.

Bonucci, who has earned 120 international caps, played a vital role in Italy’s Euro 2020 triumph and has won the Serie A title nine times.

During his career, he claimed eight championships with Juventus and one with AC Milan.

Celebrating his 500th appearance for Juventus last week, Bonucci was part of the renowned defensive lineup that included Andrea Barzagli, Giorgio Chiellini, and Gianluigi Buffon during Juventus’ dominance between the 2011/2012 and 2019/2020 seasons.

Bonucci expressed his pride in being considered among the greatest defenders and hopes that future players will look up to him and his teammates as idols.
