Author stabbed moments before speech at New York event

Salman Rushdie, the author of Satanic Verses, was stabbed in the neck at a literary event in New York on Friday.

According to New York Post, an assailant stormed the stage soon after his introduction.

The man proceeded to stab Rushdie, who was scheduled to talk at the Chautauqua Institution in Chautauqua, New York.

The author, who sustained multiple stab wounds, immediately fell through a stage barrier, according to eyewitnesses. He was airlifted to a nearby hospital, while his current health condition remains unnown.

However, his attacker was subdued by security and detained.

The British-born author was the subject of a fatwa, or religious ruling, from Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Khomeini in 1989 after his novel “The Satanic Verses” was released.

The controversial book, inspired by the life of the Islamic Prophet Muhammad (PBOH), had outraged many Muslims who held demonstrations around the world.
