Aregbesola distances self from cryptic statement over Oyetola’s defeat

The Minister of Interior and former Osun State governor, Rauf Aregbesola has denied authorizing a controversial message shared on his social media pages on Sunday morning.

Aregbesola’s successor, Gboyega Oyetola had failed to actualise his re-election bid after losing to the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Ademola Adeleke in the just-concluded governorship election in the state.

Adeleke polled 403,371 votes to defeat his old rival, the incumbent governor, Oyetola of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who secured 375,027 votes.

In what may be considered a swipe at Oyetola, a Bible verse was shared on Aregbesola’s Facebook page on Sunday morning.

The post reads, “Osun Le Tente.

“This matter is by the decree of the watchers, and the demand by the word of the holy ones: to the intent that the living may know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will, and setteth up over it the basest of men.” – (Daniel 4:17)”.

It would be recalled that the minister and the governor had fallen out due to irreconcilable political differences, with the former publicly opposing Oyetola’s second term bid.

Though APC won his polling unit, Aregbesola who controls a faction of the Osun APC boycotted the election, and was reported to have travelled abroad.

However, the ex-governor, in a statement issued by his spokesman, Sola Fasure distanced himself for the “unauthorized” messages, adding that they have been deleted.

“It has come to the attention of the media office of the Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, that an unauthorized message was posted on his Verified Twitter & Facebook Pages at about 8:00am on Sunday 17th July, 2022,” the statement read.

“The unauthorized messages have now been deleted. Members of the public, especially the media, are advised to ignore!”
