After months of speculations, CBN governor Emefiele finally joins 2023 presidential race

It is now official that the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele has joined the 2023 presidential race under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), after months of speculations and denials from his camp.

According to reports, associates of Emefiele purchased the APC expression of interest and nomination forms pegged at N100 million, on Friday.

It would be recalled that in the past months, several political groups had called on the apex bank governor to run for the nation’s top seat, a move which attracted criticisms from Nigerians.

Reacting to the calls, Emefiele had reportedly kept mum about his presidential ambition, saying he would leave his fate firmly in the hands of God.

Meanwhile, the CBN Act 2007 forbids Emefiele from venturing into any other vocation while in office and must resign in writing to the President if he nursed such intention.

“The Governor and the Deputy Governors shall devote the whole of their time to the service of the bank and while holding office shall not engage in any full or part-time employment or vocation whether remunerated or not except such personal or charitable causes as may be determined by the Board and which do not conflict with or detract from their full-time duties,” section 9 of the law reads.

This development means the CBN governor will be squaring up against bigwigs in the ruling party who had earlier declared their presidential ambition.
