A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Segun Adewale is again the flagbearer of the opposition party for the Lagos West Senatorial District seat for the 2023 general elections.
The businessman turned politician beat Yomi Ogungbe to win the PDP ticket for Lagos West at the primary held in May.
Adewale, popularly called Aeroland, is no newcomer in the political space of Lagos. In 2011, he ran for the Lagos State House of Assembly under Labour Party, but his name was removed from the ballot paper just before the election. Four years after, he tested waters for the House of Representatives seat in Alimosho Federal Constituency, but was defeated by Solomon Olamilekan Adeola (Yayi) of the then Action Congress OF Nigeria (ACN).
Undeterred, Aeroland was the PDP candidate for the Lagos West Senatorial seat in the 2015 elections. He, however, lost again to his old rival, Yayi now of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Perhaps to try his luck in a different terrain, Aeroland, a former Chairman of the Lagos PDP, returned to his home state, Ekiti and ran for the governorship seat in 2018 under the platform of a relatively unknown Action Democratic Party (ADP). His gubernatorial bid, however, hit the rocks after he managed to garner just 1,082 votes, as Kayode Fayemi of the APC won the poll with 197,459 votes.
In another attempt to achieve his long-time political ambition in Lagos, Adewale is again jostling for the Lagos West Senatorial seat. He will be squaring up against a former deputy governor of Lagos State, Dr (Mrs) Idiat Oluranti Adebule, the candidate of the APC.
For Aeroland who is considered a serial aspirant, he hopes to leverage on his political strength and popularity, though political observers predict another defeat for him, citing the weak structures of the Lagos PDP.
