Africa’s representatives at the 2026 FIFA World Cup head into the final round of group-stage matches with hopes of a strong enthusiasm in the expanded tournament still very much alive, although the path to the knockout rounds varies significantly among the continent’s 10 teams.

With two matches played, Egypt and Cape Verde have emerged as Africa’s standout performers, while Morocco, Algeria and Ivory Coast remain well placed to secure places in the Round of 32.

Egypt revived its campaign in style after suffering an opening defeat to Iran. The Pharaohs bounced back with a historic 3-1 victory over New Zealand, powered by captain Mohamed Salah, to keep their qualification hopes firmly on track. The North Africans now face a decisive final group match knowing another positive result could be enough to secure progression.

Tournament debutants Cape Verde have been one of the surprises of the competition. The island nation held European giants Spain to a goalless draw before earning another impressive point in a thrilling 2-2 draw against Uruguay. Their unbeaten start has left them within touching distance of a historic place in the knockout rounds.

Morocco, Africa’s trailblazers after reaching the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup, have continued their solid form and remain among the continent’s strongest contenders to advance. Algeria and Ivory Coast are also in favourable positions after collecting valuable points from their opening two matches, leaving qualification within their grasp heading into the final round of fixtures.

Ghana’s campaign remains delicately balanced after recording one victory and one defeat. The Black Stars know that a win in their final group game would likely secure passage to the knockout phase.

For Senegal, South Africa and DR Congo, the task is more challenging. Senegal have managed only a draw and a defeat from their opening two matches and may need victory in their final fixture to avoid an early exit. South Africa and DR Congo also face must-win situations and could require favourable results elsewhere to keep their World Cup dreams alive.

Tunisia appear to have the steepest mountain to climb after a disappointing start to their campaign. The Carthage Eagles need a strong result in their final group match and assistance from other teams if they are to remain in contention.

The expanded 48-team format has ensured that qualification remains possible for many sides entering the final round of matches, with some third-placed teams also progressing to the knockout stage.

With one round of group fixtures remaining, Africa’s teams have already demonstrated their competitiveness against some of world football’s biggest nations. Cape Verde’s remarkable unbeaten run, Egypt’s resurgence and the steady performances of Morocco, Algeria and Ivory Coast have given the continent genuine reasons for optimism.

As the battle for places in the Round of 32 intensifies, African fans will be hoping that several of their representatives can extend their stay in the tournament and continue the continent’s pursuit of a first-ever World Cup title.
