Afghan prison attack leaves dozens dead

Over 300 prisoners have escaped after an attack by Islamic State (IS) on an Afghan prison.

The prison reportedly holds hundreds of ISIS members.

The attack began on Sunday, when an IS suicide bomber drove a car laden with explosives up to the prison’s main gate, detonating the bomb.

Afghan forces retook the prison on Monday afternoon, as 29 people were killed and more than 50 were wounded in the attack.

A defense ministry spokesman said that 10 ISIS attackers were also killed in the operation and that the assailants killed 5 prisoners, including 2 members of the rival Taliban.

The attack came a day after authorities said Afghan Special Forces killed Assadulla Orakzai , a senior Islamic State commander, near Jalalabad.
