ADC Crisis Deepens as Obi, Kwankwaso eye possible switch to NDC

Fresh political realignments may be underway ahead of the 2027 general elections as Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso are reportedly considering a move away from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) amid growing pressure from the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

Multiple reports indicate that key figures within the ADC, including Obi, are weighing the option of defecting to the NDC as internal uncertainties continue to affect the party’s stability ahead of the polls.

The development follows an open call by the NDC, which has been actively courting both Obi and Kwankwaso to join its platform and possibly fly its presidential ticket.

Sources within the opposition say the move is being driven by a combination of factors, including leadership disputes within the ADC and the need to consolidate opposition forces to mount a stronger challenge in 2027.

The NDC had earlier hinted at a limited window for both politicians to defect and secure its ticket, signalling urgency in its coalition-building efforts.

However, aides and close allies of Obi have neither confirmed nor denied the defection talks, maintaining that the former Anambra governor remains focused on contesting the 2027 election, regardless of platform.

The speculation comes amid a broader push for opposition unity, with political groups exploring alliances to challenge the dominance of the ruling party. Analysts say the outcome of these talks could significantly reshape the opposition landscape in the months ahead.

If the move materialises, it would mark another major shift for both Obi and Kwankwaso, whose political alignments have continued to evolve as preparations intensify for the next general election.
