AC Milan extend manager’s contract despite poor UCL run

AC Milan have awarded manager Stefano Pioli a contract extension that runs until 30 June, 2023. The Rossoneri made the announcement on their official website two days after the first Champions League win of the season.

Pioli, who was once Inter Milan’s coach, played a crucial role in granting AC Milan a return to the Champions League after seven years layoff. The return, however, was not a glamorous one for the seven-time Champions League winner.

Despite parading the likes of Olivier Giroud, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Fikayo, Tomori, Brahim Diaz, and others, AC Milan had only managed to earn four points in five Champions League matches this season — having lost three matches and draw one before defeating Atletico Madrid on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the win not just secured three point for the Rossoneri, it also ensured Pioli earned more stay at the San Siro. Though their chance of progressing to the Champions League knockout stage is slim, but their Serie A standing looks quite impressive to trigger Pioli’s contract extension.

Unlike the Champions League where they sit third, AC Milan currently sit second in the Serie A with just five goals difference behind table toppers, Napoli while keeping four points clear distance ahead of current defending champions and sister club, Inter Milan.

Speaking on his contract extension, Pioli expressed his gratitude to the club over the opportunity given to him.

“I want to thank the Club for having given me the chance to coach a competitive team and one that is replete with great values, which must never go missing and which make AC Milan special.

“I’m proud of the work we’ve done until now, with the good relationship I have with the management, with the growth of my players and with the passion displayed by everyone working at this incredible Club. Our fans are extraordinary and I hope to return their affection by making AC Milan more and more competitive,” he said.
