Aare Ona Kankafo: 19 years after MKO Abiola’s death, OPC leader, Gani Adams becomes Yoruba Generalissimo

The Alaafin of Oyo has named Otunba Gani Adams the new Aare Ona Kankafo

Oodua Peoples Congress National Coordinator, Otunba Gani Adams has been declared the new Aare Ona Kankafo BlackBox Nigeria has learnt.

This is coming 19 years after the death of the last Aare Ona Kankafo, MKO Abiola who was the 14th person to hold the title. Aare Ona Kankafo is one of the most prestigious titles in Yoruba land specially for powerful sons. The title means a Generalissimo.

The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III on Sunday made the pronouncement making Gani Adams the new Generalissimo, the leader of all Yoruba warriors. The appointment was made via a letter handed over to Adams on Sunday.

Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola who died on July 10, 1998 took over the title decades after the demise of the previous Aare Ona Kankafo, Chief Samul  Akintola who was killed in Nigeria’s first military coup of January 1966.

Otunba Gani Adams is the 15th Aare Ona Kankafo.
