Dowen College, a secondary school located in Lekki, one of the highbrow areas in Nigeria’s economic capital, Lagos, has been in the news in the last couple of days — albeit for the wrong reasons.
The school, on Friday, was shut by the Lagos State Government following the controversial death of a Junior Secondary School 2 student, Sylvester Oromoni who was said to have been bullied and beaten by fellow students; a claim the school management has since denied.

1. It is owned by Osborne Olumide Philips, father of singer and actress; Lami Philips who is also the Director of Students Affairs at the school.
2. In 2010, music star, Wizkid shot his debut video, ‘Holla at your boy’ at Dowen College. The video featured then label boss, Banky W, Sophie Alakija and an array of some other celebrities.
3. Fast-rising singer Temilade Openiyi popularly known as Tems attended the school for her secondary education.
4. Video jockey and television presenter, Laura Monyeazo Abebe popularly known as Moet Abebe spent one year of her secondary education at Dowen College.
5. Described as a coeducational boarding and day school for kids between ages 11-18, Dowen College is said to be one of the most expensive schools in Nigeria with student tuition pegged around N2 million.
