3 days After Arrest, In-Law To Tinubu’s Loyalist Still In Detention

It is no longer news that the former media aide to Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State, Salihu Tanko-Yakasai, is in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).

Yakasai, known as ‘Dawisu’ on social media platform Twitter, was reportedly arrested by the secret police in Kano while “on his way to a barbing salon.”

This happened hours after he called for President Muhammadu Buhari to resign over his inability to prevent the recent abduction of schoolgirls in Zamfara State among other security concerns.

“Clearly, we as APC government, at all levels, have failed Nigerians in the number 1 duty we were elected to do which is to secure lives & properties. Not a single day goes by without some sort of insecurity in this land. This is a shame! Deal with terrorists decisively or resign,” he had tweeted.

His comments, however, didn’t go well with his principal, Governor Ganduje as he was immediately relieved of his appointment.

In a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information Mallam Muhammad Garba, the state government said Yakasai’s sack was due to his “continued unguarded comments and utterances which are deemed contrary to the stand of the All Progressive Congress (APC) government which he is serving.”

Like Father, Like Son

Salihu is the son of Tanko Yakasai, a founding member of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF). The senior Yakasai served as the Special Assistant to President Shehu Shagari on National Assembly Liaison from 1979 to 1983.

A renowned political activist, Tanko Yakasai faced persecution — in form of arrests and detentions on ten different occasions — between 1953 and 1986. The first four was during days of colonialism, the next four in the First Republic.

The last two happened during the era of military dictatorship: under General Muhammadu Buhari (who is now the President) and General Ibrahim Babangida regimes.

Many persons have opined that the Salihu’s travails for his criticisms of the Buhari government is a repetition of history since his father faced the same fate.

Elegushi’s In-Law

Investigations revealed that Salihu Tanko Yakasai’s sister, Hadiza Tanko, is married as second wife to Oba Saheed Elegushi, the 21st Elegushi of the Ikate-Elegushi Kingdom.

They were officially married on May 3rd, 2019 in Yankaba, Kano State.

Hadiza was delivered of a baby boy in London on August 21st, 2020.

Elegushi is a known associate and loyalist of the former Lagos State governor and National Leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, having served as the latter’s Personal Assistant while in office.

He also worked with former Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola before resigning in 2010 to succeed his father as King.
