21-year-old Bayelsa varsity student found dead in swimming pool

Tragedy struck in Bayelsa State as a 21-year-old university student was found dead in a swimming pool at an event center in the Otuoke community of Ogbia Local Government Area. The deceased, identified as Bright Akhere, was a 200-level student of the Department of Mathematics at the Federal University Otuoke.

According to reports, Akhere had gone for a swimming exercise with some friends at the event center on the evening of April 24, 2023. However, his friends reportedly left the pool around 5 pm without him, and his whereabouts were unknown until his lifeless body was found in the swimming pool the following day.

The police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the suspected drowning of the student. The State Police Public Relations Officer, Asinim Butswat, confirmed the incident, stating that a team of operatives had visited the scene and evacuated the corpse to the mortuary for autopsy.

“Preliminary investigation reveals that the deceased Bright Akhere 21 years, a student from the Department of Mathematics in the Federal University Otuoke, was with his friends at the swimming pool the previous evening, 24th April and the friends left the pool at about 1700 hours.

He said: “A team of operatives visited the scene and evacuated the corpse to the mortuary for autopsy. Police are on the trail of the friends who are now at large. The investigation is ongoing to unravel the circumstances surrounding the suspected drowning of the student.”
