Prince Charles Philip Arthur George, has emerged as the new monarch of the United Kingdom, following the announcement of the passing on of The Queen of England and the Commonwealth, Queen Elizabeth.

Prince Charles of Wales is automatically the new monarch, being the eldest son of the late Queen Elizabeth.

Below are 10 things to know about the new Monarch:

1. He was born in Buckingham Palace as the first grandchild of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth

2. He served in the Royal Air Force and Royal Navy from 1971 to 1976.

3. He was created Prince of Wales and Earl of Chester on 26 July 1958, though his investiture was not held until 1 July 1969.

4. He was married twice; first to Lady Diana, then Camilla Parker.

5. As the Prince of Wales, he undertook official duties on behalf of the Queen.

6. He founded The Prince’s Trust in 1976.

7. He sponsors The Prince’s Charities, and is a patron, president, or a member of over 400 other charities and organisations.

8. He once expressed an interest in serving as Governor-General of Australia.

9. In 2008, The Daily Telegraph described him as the “hardest-working member of the royal family”, as he carried out 560 official engagements in 2008.

10. The Prince of Wales (Charles) and the Duchess of Cornwall made their first joint trip to the Republic of Ireland in May 2015.
