10 Children Die as Cambodia Boat Capsizes

Almost 10 children have lost their lives and 1 missing in the Cambodia boat accident that occurred on the Mekong river, when taking them home from an English Class on Thursday.

 

The Local police chief, Am Thou disclosed that the boat was overloaded and sank about 50 metres (160 feet) in the southeastern Kandal province on Thursday,

“It’s a sad accident,” Thou said.

Am Thou added that the victims were between the ages of 12 and 15, adding that two adult boat operators and two students were rescued.

In a Facebook post, Prime Minister Hun Sen expressed his condolences and implored people to be cautious during heavy floods that have raised the level of the Mekong.

Boat accidents have been prevailing in the Southeast Asian nation, with people who live along the river reliant on the vessels for transport.

 

It should be recalled that in 2009, an overloaded river ferry also capsized in northeastern Cambodia, killing at least 17 passengers.
