Reports reaching BlackBox Nigeria have revealed that the building which collapsed yesterday leaving about a dozen people many of which are school pupils dead was actually marked for demolition.

It was gathered that authorities of the state government have before now marked the structure for demolition because it was substandard but BlackBox Nigeria learnt the owner have always have his way with those in charge especially by handing them bribes. 

This claim was further confirmed by the General Manager of the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), Mr Olalekan Shodeinde who stated that the building was meant to be demolished but the landlord claimed he had fixed the shortcomings while letting it out to tenants including the affected school.

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode who visited the spot on Wednesday also corroborated the story revealing that the building just like many others around have been marked for demolition but the authorities were facing difficulties due to resistance from the property owners around. 

“As you can see, some of the buildings have been marked for demolition. We get resistance from landlords. We will intensify efforts to see that occupants of those (buildings) that failed our integrity test are evacuated then we will bring such structures down,” Governor Ambode said. 

Lagos School Collapse Update: Several Casualties Recorded

BlackBox Nigeria however gathered that the affected landlords have been tipping state officials to look the other way while they continue to operate the marked-for-demolition structures at the detriment of the safety of people.

Wednesday tragedy saw the death of about a dozen people with many others severely injured.

BlackBox further gathered that concerned Nigerians have been calling for the donation of blood to the injured people who have been pegged at 37 as at the time of filing this report.
