The Zamfara State Police Command has arrested a member of the State House of Assembly and a former local government chairman for their alleged involvement in banditry activities.
The Commissioner of Police, Muhammad Dalijan, made the announcement during a meeting with Thomas Parker, the head of the Counterterrorism Unit at the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.
The meeting, held at the police command headquarters in Gusau, aimed to strengthen collaboration between the police and the UN in combating terrorism and banditry in the state.
Dalijan did not reveal the identities of the detained lawmaker and former council leader but emphasized the need for international support in tackling the security challenges facing Zamfara.
The commissioner appealed to the UN to assist in establishing a forensic laboratory in the state, which would enable the police to conduct timely forensic analysis without relying on the lab in Lagos. He also requested the UN to replicate its successful initiative in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, in Zamfara.
