Yusuf hints at APC return as Kano governor dismisses ‘one-term’ campaign

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has stirred fresh political debate after suggesting he could serve a second term under the All Progressives Congress (APC), despite being elected on the platform of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).

The Kano governor made the remark while reacting to the popular “one-term” slogan locally known as “Falle Daya” being used by political opponents against his administration.

Responding to the chant, Yusuf dismissed it and hinted at a broader political plan beyond his current party.

“Actually, it is only one term in NNPP…” he said, implying that his political journey could extend into another platform for a second tenure.

The comment has been widely interpreted as a signal of his openness to aligning with the APC ahead of the 2027 elections, reinforcing earlier reports about his political realignment.

Yusuf had earlier dumped the NNPP amid internal party disputes and formally joined the APC, a move that significantly reshaped Kano’s political landscape.

His defection was accompanied by a wave of political shifts, including lawmakers and local government officials who moved with him, strengthening his position within the ruling party.

Political observers say the governor’s latest remark suggests a strategic calculation aimed at consolidating power ahead of the next election cycle, particularly in a state known for its volatile political dynamics.

The statement has since generated mixed reactions, with critics accusing him of political inconsistency, while supporters argue it reflects pragmatism in navigating Nigeria’s evolving political terrain.

As the 2027 elections draw closer, Yusuf’s positioning is expected to remain a key factor in Kano’s political direction, especially given the influence of former allies and rival blocs within the state.
