President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reassured Nigerians that his administration has no intention of creating a one-party state, dismissing concerns raised by some political opponents.
Speaking during his Democracy Day address at the National Assembly, Tinubu emphasized his commitment to a multi-party system, citing his own history of standing against attempts to suppress opposition.
“At no time in the past, nor any instance in the present, and at no future juncture shall I view the notion of a one-party state as good for Nigeria,” Tinubu declared.
The President’s assurance comes amid growing concerns among opposition parties and civil society groups about the potential erosion of democratic institutions.
Tinubu’s words were seen as a welcome reassurance, particularly given the recent defections of lawmakers and state officials to the ruling party.
The President also welcomed the new members, urging other parties to examine their internal processes rather than fearing defections.
“Political parties fearful of members leaving may be better served by examining their internal processes and affairs rather than fearfully conjuring up demons that do not exist,” he said.
