Year 2020: NANS Presidential Hopeful, Comrade Muniru D. Momodu Tasks Nigerian Students To Shun Unpatriotic Practices
The agenda to witness an eventful year as the top echelon of the National Association of Nigerian Student is set to go into the polls has already begun as a presidential hopeful of the student association, Comrade Muniru D. Momodu earlier urged students nationwide to shun unpatriotic practices especially with the unfolding of a new decade.
The presidential aspirant who has transverse most of the tertiary institutions in the country to sell his NANS rebuilding agenda charged stakeholders to reflect on the challenges bedevilling education in the past year and keep the resolve to tackle it head-on.
Comrade Momodu in his address further assured that year 2020 represents the opportunity to rewrite history as he leads the revolution to fight vices like underfunding, victimization of student’s leaders by the institutional authorities, hike in payable fees, sexual harassment and insecurity across campuses.
He finally in the mood of the yuletide, reiterated that he is committed to seeking improved funding of education up to 26% budgetary allocation as recommended by UNESCO, call for the reinstatement of victimized students and students’ leaders back to campus, ensure students’ participation in the decision making across tertiary institution, and advocate for the erection of more hostels and lecture theatres.
Below his full address,
I felicitate with all Nigerian Students, cadres and stakeholders as we welcome the year 2020. On this joyous occasion, let us continue to reflect on the concomitant challenges facing the Nigerian Students community and the education sector in the past years. The resolved towards recovering the student’s movement from the abyss is unshaken.
As Nigerian Students, we must play our part by continuing to support ongoing efforts by team Momodu for NANS President to reclaim, rebuild and restructure the apex body of the student’s movement.
The forthcoming NANS Convention/Election provides us with a great opportunity to rewrite history, I want to reiterate my stand that only candidates that should be elected at all level must be those that have valid studentship in tertiary institutions and must also be those that can pass the integrity test and be adjudged to be above board in positions of responsibility they have held in the past.
We have launched a campaign to fight underfunding in the education sector, victimization of student’s leaders by the institutional authorities, hike in payable fees, sexual harassment and insecurity on our campuses.
We remain solidly committed to installing the discipline of advocating for improve funding of education up to 26% budgetary allocation as recommended by UNESCO, reinstatement of victimized students and students leaders back to campus, students participation in the decision making in our tertiary institution, erection of more hostels and lecture theatres.
I urge Nigerian students to kick against unpatriotic practices such as cultism, internet fraud, and examination malpractices. We must shun divisive elements in our private and public spaces who exploit sentiments to sell hatred and intolerance amongst us in the name of ethnicity, religion, political affiliation and other leanings. Despite our perceived differences, our strength remains in our diversity.
Finally, comrades and compatriots, I call on us all to look forward to the new year with great optimism and positive possibilities as we resolved to take NANS back to the campus.
