The newly elected President of the United States of America, Donald Trump, has appointed Elon Musk, CEO of X (formerly Twitter), to head the newly created Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
Musk, a vocal supporter of Trump and owner of Tesla and SpaceX, will work alongside entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy.
In a statement released on Tuesday, President Trump announced, “I am pleased to announce that the great Elon Musk, working in conjunction with American patriot Vivek Ramaswamy, will lead the Department of Government Efficiency.”
Trump elaborated on the mission of DOGE, adding, “Together, these two remarkable Americans will pave the way for my administration to dismantle government bureaucracy, slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures, and restructure federal agencies essential to the ‘Save America’ movement.”
Elon Musk commented on the significance of the new department, stating, “This will send shockwaves through the system, and anyone involved in government waste which is a lot of people should take note!” He described DOGE as potentially becoming the “Manhattan Project” of modern government reform, an initiative Republican leaders have envisioned for years.
Trump also emphasized that the department’s goal is to eliminate fraud and waste across the annual $6.5 trillion federal budget, aiming to make the government more accountable to the American people.
However, Musk and Ramaswamy are expected to complete their work by July 4, 2026, coinciding with the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. Trump remarked, “A smaller government, with more efficiency and less bureaucracy, will be the perfect gift to America on this milestone anniversary.”
Elon Musk’s active support for Trump was notable throughout the campaign, with Musk donating approximately $132 million to Trump and other Republican candidates, according to the Federal Election Commission (FEC).
Musk also served as a policy advisor and frequently promoted Trump’s message on his social media platform, X, which effectively became a MAGA platform during the campaign.
Additionally, Musk initiated a controversial cash giveaway in key swing states, offering registered voters the chance to win $1 million a day if they signed a petition supporting the First and Second Amendments, which protect freedom of speech and the right to bear arms.
