Wrestling legend and global superstar John Cena has officially retired from professional wrestling, drawing the curtain on a storied 24-year career in the WWE.
His emotional final match took place on Saturday, December 13, at WWE’s Saturday Night’s Main Event held at the Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C.
Cena, 48, faced Intercontinental Champion Gunther in what became a symbolic farewell bout. In a rare moment, Cena lost via submission: the first time he has tapped out in over two decades marking a quiet but powerful end to his in-ring journey.
As the match concluded, Cena left his iconic wristbands and boots in the ring, a traditional wrestler’s gesture signalling retirement.
The crowd rose to its feet with a thunderous ovation, as chants of “Thank you, Cena!” echoed through the arena.
Known for his “Never Give Up” motto, Cena is a 17-time world champion, tying Ric Flair’s record and becoming one of the most decorated and influential wrestlers in WWE history.
Beyond the ring, he has also found success in Hollywood, starring in films like The Suicide Squad and Fast & Furious 9.
WWE superstars, legends, and fans flooded social media with tributes after the match, celebrating Cena’s legacy, sportsmanship, and impact on generations of fans.
While Cena has now stepped away from active competition, WWE sources suggest he may continue to be involved in other non-wrestling capacities within the company.
His retirement marks the end of an era for WWE and the farewell of one of its most enduring heroes.
