William Troost-Ekong, the captain of the Nigerian national football team, has officially announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to a decade long career representing the Super Eagles.

In a statement he shared through his social media page, Troost-Ekong reflected on his journey, which began in 2015 when the late Stephen Keshi called him up to the national team. “His belief in me ignited a desire to follow in his footsteps,” he said.

Over the years, he earned 83 senior caps, played in five major tournaments, and won three medals, including a bronze at the 2016 Rio Olympics and a silver at the 2023 AFCON.

The defender, who became the highest scoring defender in AFCON history, expressed pride in leading Nigeria and inspiring the next generation. “As a custodian of an iconic shirt, I’ve always known it was only borrowed. Now it’s the turn of the next generation to continue to write their own story,” he stated.

Troost-Ekong thanked his coaches, teammates past and present, and Nigerian fans for their support throughout his international career. He emphasized that while his playing days for Nigeria may have ended, his commitment to the team and his work within Nigerian communities would continue.

Wearing the Super Eagles shirt, he concluded, “It has been more than playing football. It has been a duty, a privilege, and an honour.”
