As an undergraduate, I innocently joined other agitated Nigerians in March 2010 to match against what we called the ills in government.
We matched from a Church premises on Oba Akran through the streets of Ikeja to Governor Fashola’s office. The same thing was done in Abuja(a match to the National Assembly). Our clamour was simply a call for things to be done properly chief of which was a request to know the status of the President’s health…he should come out and talk to Nigerians. We matched against the cabal!
Asides Wole Soyinka, Femi Falana and Joe Odumakin, there were hundreds of politicians, celebs and young advocates. It was at this struggle I first met Chude Jideonwo who was one of the main conveners, Tolu Ogunlesi who is today a Presidential aide, Banky W who granted me an unusual interview where he revealed Wizkid has dumped my beloved LASU and many others too numerous to mention…
Now the purpose of all these emphasis is simple. Nigeria is in a similar situation again but then, where are all our agitators?
Where is Eldee the Don, where is Sound Sultan, Rita Dominic, Denrenle Edun, where is MI Abaga and all the other part-time activists?
Yesterday was Workers’ Day but unfortunately there was no President to address the Nation, there was no leader to reaassure the Nigerian worker that his labour isnt in vain (not like we would have believed though).
Our President has moved from coming out for Friday prayers to going completely under the radar, not even his advisers know what is happening. Or so we have been made to believe!
But we are more occupied by which Jollof rice is better between Ghana’s and ours. We are more preoccupied with how Arsenal must make the EPL top 4. We are more concerned about why Wizkid hasnt met Drake one-on-one despite having 3 or is it 4 songs between them. We are preoccupied with irrelevant issues while our country is plunging into the dark abyss.
All those who championed the “Where is Yar’Adua” campaign have been co opted into the current administration and as people who have table manners, they cannot talk while eating. But then posterity would remember us all for what we do or do not do.
