The name ‘Sunday Igboho’ has been making the news in the past few days. The reasons aren’t far-fetched.
Here’s what BlackBox Nigeria gathered so far:
Igboho, whose real name is Sunday Adeyemo, last week led some youths to the residence of Sarkin Fulani of Oyo state, Saliu Abdulkadir to register their displeasure over the recent killings, kidnapping and attack on innocent Nigerians in the Ibarapa area of the state. There, he issued a seven (7) day ultimatum to the herdsmen to vacate the state.
On Friday, he visited Igangan, a community in Ibarapa North Local Government Area, to restate his ultimatum to Fulanis to leave. Few hours later, some angry youths, suspected to be Igboho’s supporters, set ablaze the house of the Seriki Fulani of Oyo State.
Meanwhile, Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has ordered the Police to arrest Sunday Igboho and others causing tension in the state. Makinde, while receiving the new Commissioner of Police, Ngozi Onadeko, said when arrested, those stoking ethnic tension should be “treated like common criminals.”
He told the CP, “I am sure that since you came in, you must have heard about some things happening at Ibarapa axis of the state. I will still say it here that we are not after Hausa-Fulani. We are after criminals.”
In reaction, Igboho in an interview with BBC Yoruba denied commanding Fulani herdsmen to vacate the state, saying his involvement was prompted by the government’s failure to handle the crisis.
He said, “They are saying I am not in government and that I am meddling with what does not concern me. If there is a government and it is not doing what it is supposed to do, the people that voted will rise up.
“It’s not like I commanded the Fulani to leave our land or that I suddenly said something arbitrarily. For like two weeks now, these Fulani people in Ibarapa have been killing our people.”
