From three goals down, Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets came close to a stunning comeback against their Ivorian counterparts in the final match of the WAFU B Tournament in Lome, Togo, on Monday night.
Racing ahead with a 1-0 lead in the first half and scoring a second, the baby Elephants’ Seydou Traore made it 3-0 in the 84th minute.
The two late goals from substitute striker Ahmed Abdullahi proved inadequate to get the five-time world champions the desired win, as they were beaten 3-2 by the Baby Elephants.
The Ivorian side had won all their previous three games in the tournament (1-0 over Nigeria; 3-1 over Ghana and; 1-0 over Niger Republic).
Both teams, however, have qualified to the 2021 Africa U17 Cup of Nations holding in Morocco 13th -31st March.
Burkina Faso’s Baby Etalons, placed third after winning Niger Republic 10-9 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in regulation time.
The Golden Eaglets’ contingent is expected back in Nigeria on Tuesday.
