The Nigerian entertainment industry is in mourning following the death of popular Yoruba actor Olusegun Akinremi, fondly known as Chief Kanran, who passed away at age 69— 3 days before 70th birthday.

The sad news was confirmed via Instagram by producer Seun Oloketuyi on Friday.

Chief Kanran earned widespread admiration in the Yoruba film world for his charismatic roles often portraying kings, chiefs, and elders with a sharp sense of humour, refined elegance, and a commanding stage presence.

His famous works include Ewe Orun, Aiye, Efunsetan Aniwura, Agbarin, and Bata Wahala, all of which showcased his exceptional acting abilities.

A pioneer in the industry, Chief Kanran began his career on stage and transitioned successfully to television and film.

He took part in popular NTA drama productions and became a household name across stage and screen.

His commitment to his craft was demonstrated in 2015 when he celebrated 50 years in acting, a milestone marked by personal reflections on the difficulties he overcame—losing his home and studio to fire, facing abandonment, and enduring financial hardship.

Chief Kanran had already stepped away from acting by 2020, citing internal politics and industry disagreements as reasons for his exit.

Despite stepping back, his legacy remains deeply felt, with fans and colleagues across Nollywood paying tribute to a man whose performances carried both cultural depth and comedic flair.

Details regarding the cause of death and funeral arrangements are yet to be announced.

His passing adds to the growing concern over the welfare and support systems for aging Nigerian actors who have contributed decades of artistry to the film industry.
