Dr. Doyin Abiola, a pioneering figure in Nigerian journalism and the first woman to serve as Managing Director and Editor-in-Chief of a national daily newspaper, has passed away at the age of 82.
She is one of the wives of June 12, 1993 presidential election winner, Chief MKO Abiola.
She died at 9:15 p.m. on Tuesday after a period of illness, according to family sources.
Dr. Abiola’s illustrious career began in 1969 at the Daily Sketch, where her column “Tiro” addressed pressing societal issues, notably gender equity.
She later pursued advanced studies in journalism in the United States, earning a master’s degree before returning to Nigeria to join the Daily Times as a Features Writer, eventually rising to Group Features Editor.
In 1986, she broke new ground by becoming the Managing Director and Editor-in-Chief of National Concord, a newspaper founded by her husband, the late Chief MKO Abiola.
Her leadership spanned over three decades, during which she mentored a generation of journalists and significantly influenced media discourse in Nigeria.
Born in 1943, Dr. Abiola’s contributions extended beyond journalism; she was a staunch advocate for democracy and women’s rights.
Her passing marks the end of an era for Nigerian media and serves as a poignant reminder of her enduring legacy.
Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced by the family.
